The 78L05 is designed as one member of the LM78LXX series of three terminal positive regulators is available with several fixed output voltages making them useful in a wide range of applications. When used as a zener diode/resistor combination replacement, it usually results in an effective output impedance improvement of two orders of magnitude, and lower quiescent current. These regulators can provide local on card regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated with single point regulation. The voltages available allow the LM78LXX to be used in logic systems, instrumentation, HiFi, and other solid state electronic equipment.
It has eight features. (1) It is in micro SMD package. (2) Output voltage tolerances of ±5% over the temperature range. (3) Output current of 100 mA. (4) Internal thermal overload protection. (5) Output transistor safe area protection. (6) Internal short circuit current limit. (7) Available in plastic TO-92 and plastic SO-8 low profile packages. (8) No external components. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings have been concluded into several points as follow. (1) Its input voltage would be 35V. (2) Its storage temperature range would be form -65°C to +150°C. (3) Its operating junction temperature range would be from 0°C to 125°C for SO-8 and would be from -40°C to 85°C for micro SMD. (4) Its soldering information would be 235°C for infraed or convection 20 sec and would be 260°C (lead time) for wave soldering 10 sec. (5) Its ESD susceptibility would be 1kV.
Also some electrical characteristics about it. (1) Its output voltage would be min 4.8V and typ 5V and max 5.2V. (2) Its line regulation would be typ 18 and max 75mV for 7V < Vin < 20V and would be typ 10mV and max 54mV for 8V < Vin < 20V. And so on.
