The UM82450 is designed as a programmable asynchronous communication element (ACE) chip fabricated using the Si-Gate NMOS process. It is an improved version of the the UM8250. It performs serial to parallel conversion on data characters received from a peripheral device or a modem, and parallel to serial conversion on data characters received from the CPU. The CPU can read the complete status of the ACE at any time during functional operation. It also includes a programmable baud rate generator that is capable of dividing the timing reference clock input by divisors of 1 to 2^16-1, and producing a 16x clock for driving the internal transmitter logic.
UM82450 has fifteen features. (1)Adds or deletes standard asynchronous communication bits (start, stop and parity) to from a serial data stream. (2)Full double buffering eliminates the need for precise synchronization. (3)Independently controlled transmit, receive, line status, and data set interrupts. (4)Programmable baud rate generator allows division of any input clock by 1 to 2^16-1 and generates the internal 16x clock. (5)Independent receiver clock input. (6)Modem control functions. (7)Single +5V power supply. (8)Tri-state TTL drive capabilities for bidirectional data bus and control bus. (9)Fully programmable serial-interface characteristics. (10)False start bit detection. (11)Complete status reporting capabilities. (12)Easily interfaces to most popular microprocessors. (13)Line break generation and detection. (14)Internal diagnostic capabilities. (2)Its storage temperature range would be from -65°C to +150°C. (3)Its all input or output voltages with respect to Vss would be from -0.5V to +7.0V. (4)Its power dissipation would be 700mW.
