MAXl811 is a lithium battery charging integrated circuit, the charger which is composed of this IC is widely used in MP3 player, digital camera and PDA and some portable instruments.
1. pin function and data
MAXl811 integrated circuit adopts 8-foot dual in-line package, the pin function and data of this integrated circuit is shown in the table1.

2. typical application circuit
MAXl811 typical application circuit is shown in the figure1. The IC has two set terminals, when SELV is set to high level, the final charging voltage is 4.2V, when it is set to low level, the voltage is 4.1V. The other set terminal is SELI, when it is set to high level, the charging current is 500MA, when it is low level, the current is 100MA.

Nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery protection circuit is shown as below. The charging part is composed of D1, D2, R2 and BG1. The charge protection circuit is composed of BG2 and R1. When the nickel-cadmium batteries are charging, light emitting diode LED will be lighten. It indicates charging is normal. If the battery polarity is reversed, base BG2 will be negative potential, BG2 stops, BG1 the base potential will be raised, BG1 stops. It will not charge for nickel-cadmium battery, LED will not lit. The circuit is shown in diagram 2-2. It consists of three terminal regulator 708 and four loads current source composed of triode VT2~VT5. VT1 and corresponding adjustable resistance RRP1, RP2 and switching tube S is used to control each roads charging current. When S is placed on position 1, charging current of each roads is 90mA; when S placed 2 and 3, it can get 100mA~300mA charging current by adjusting RP1 and RP2. If it adopts current above 200mA to charge, each triode should add radiator. Light emitting diode VD5~VD8 in diagram 2-2 is used as charge indicator. Whole circuit can supply by 220V mains, it also can supply by 12V storage battery. Charge time can count according to the following formula:
Charging time(h)=Nickel-cadmium battery capacity(mAh)/charge current(mA)
In actual use, charging time can proper extended.

D / A converter outputs a voltage to the bottom of the op amp inverting input, the circuit current I = Uad / sampling resistor, the two PORT are used to access the battery + and - poles. The magnification of the amplifier circuit is 1/4. It is used for measuring battery voltage. The 2 adjusted tubes are 3dd13 and 3dd15.

working principleDiagram 4-27 is the principle diagram of this charger. The voltage of LM339's pin 5 V5=6V. When the battery voltage E is less than 12V, V4 is less than 6V. LM339's pin 2 outputs high level. It can let 9013 saturation. 3AD30 is on amplified state. The measured value is 300mA when using heavy current to charge. When E≥12V, V5≥6V. LM339's pin 2 output low level. 9013 and 3AD30 is cut off. It adopts 40mA low current to charge to the battery. The curved line of measured charge current is shown in diagram 4-28.
