Founded in the year of 1984, Atmel becomes the leader in secure systems nowadays. Atmel devotes itself in the system-level solution built around flash microcontrollers. Its main products include microcontrollers, and its own Atmel AVR and AVR32 architectures, radio frequency devices, EEPROM and flash memory devices and a number of application-specific products. According it the requirements of customers, Atmel offer its devices as standard products, ASICs, or ASSPs. The products of this company always apply in the consumer, communications, computer networking, industrial, medical, automotive, aerospace and military fields.
A microcontroller with an RFID reader block is developed for the Atmel, which are designed for the Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) RFID readers and programmers for access control, industrial automation and animal identification applications. This is the first MCU that in the same package with full LF FRID reader. The MCU and FRID reader are in two different packages in the past. It is available in a 5mm x 7mm QFN package and operating in the low-frequency (LF) range at 100-150kHz.
With the ATA5505, only a few external components and an antenna coil can build a complete reader. The expensive discrete components, such as crystals, are not needed. The competitors’ 2-chip RFID solutions use the discrete components now. The Atmel AVR MCU has 16kbyte of in-system self-programmable flash, 512byte SRAM and 512byte EEPROM. The 16 general-purpose I/O lines, 32 general-purpose working registers, one 8-bit timer/counter with compare modes, one 8-bit high-speed timer/counter, a universal serial interface (USI), a LIN controller, internal and external interrupts, a 11-channel 10-bit A/D converter and programmable watchdog timer with internal oscillator are also included. The devices with this component will also gain the low power consumption and high processing speed.
