The LEDs are always designed to be in series to implement the high power LED illumination application. This application can not be taken by single LED because of the heat-dissipation problem. However, the series-connected construction has its shortcoming: when one LED is broken, the whole light can not work. In order to solve this problem, many suppliers have released the LED protective elements with different size, such as Bourns, Littlefuse, TE, Onsemi, Vishay and so on.
The traditional LED protective element is mainly used to protect the surge which is produced by lighting stroke, but it does not care how to make the light work normally in the outside. The new products are able to meet all the demands above. What is more, the LED protective element has the reverse current diode which can protect the LED lights from the influence of power reversed polarity.
Kelly Casey, the marketing director of Bourns, says that the LSPLED shunt protective element can provide more reliability, and it can protect the LED which is up to 3W. More and more LED designers begin to know the advantage of this type. It is predicated that the demand of this product will increase quickly in future several years. Currently, Bourns is able to provide four kinds of LSP components which all apply the SMB package. All the series can work between 75mA to 1000mA. Kelly Casey maintains that they produce the semiconductor component in their own factory, so they have large flexibility to meet customer’s demand quickly. Now, the delivery time is sixteen weeks to twenty weeks. What is more, Bourns will provide one stop service for the components used in LED illumination design, including the over voltage, over current, high temperature protective element and the inductor.
Now, people consider using the SCR and zener diode to protect the LED, but these three components have so many different properties. There are some different points of SCR, zener diode and LED element below, firstly, the SCR and LED can provide open-loop protection, which can not be done by zener diode; secondly, LED element have the reversion protection, which can not be done by the other two materials. The related integrated circuit is 2SC1815.
