Why PCI?
The Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Local Bus originated in the early 1990s as a standard for connecting Intel-based computers to peripheral devices. Gradually as data processing requirements increased, the PCI Bus became a leading system platform. Many industry systems in various markets employ the PCI Bus interface.
Family Highlights
All three devices using the PCI Bus interface are capable of operating up to 33MHz at 5V, and support auto-configuration with an external EEPROM for plug-and-play. Additionally, the devices' register set is compatible to the industry's standard 16C550, providing easy software migration from existing driver codes. Their global interrupt source register offers an at-a-glance status that is capable of identifying which channel's transmitter, or receiver has requested service. This greatly improves interrupt service efficiency and eliminates the conventional approach of individually reading each channel.
The XR17C152 have automatic hardware (RTS/CTS or DTR/DSR) and software flow (Xon/Xoff) control, preventing data loss and retransmission. They support programmable FIFO interrupt trigger levels and level counters to optimize interrupt intervals. Also, the series supports auto RS-485 direction control and selectable turn-around delay enabling faster polling in half-duplex networks.
Exar offers a PCI Bus demonstration add-on card with schematics and Windows(TM) 2000 or NT driver for evaluation. A Linux driver is also available.
