The R6522 is designed as versatile interfac adapter (VIA) which is a very flexible I/O control device. In addition, this device contains a pair of very powerful 16-bit interval timers, a serial-to-parallel / parallel-to serial shift register and input data latching on the peripheral ports.
The R6522 has many features. The first one is two 8-bit bidirectional I/O ports. The second one is two 16-bit programmable timer/counters. The third one is serial bidirectional peripheral I/O. The fourth one is TTL compatible peripheral control lines. The fifth one is expended "handshake" capability allows positive control of data transfers between processor and peripheral devices. The sixth one is latched output and input registers on both I/O ports. The seventh one is 1 and 2MHz operation. The eighth one is commerial and industrial temperature range versions. The ninth one is single +5Vdc power requirement. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings of R6522 have been concluded into several points as follow. The first one is about its supply voltage which would be from -0.3V to +7.0V.
