The Q1650 is designed as K=7 multi-code rate viterbi decoder which provide higher throughput data rates with improved bit error rate performance for power-limited (and in some cases bandwidth-limited) digital communication channels. Convolutional encoding of data combined with viterbi decoding at the receiving node is the industry FEC standard for digital channels, especially those concerned with errors caused by the introduction of additive white gaussian noise.
Q1650 has many features. The first one is stand-along full-duplex rate 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 and 7/8 encode/decoder. The next one is three pin-for-pin compaible versions: 2.5, 10 and 25Mbps. The next one is on-chip bit error monitor. The next one is processor interface simplifies control and status. The next one is 3-bit soft-decision decoder inputs.
