thatcanbeusedinavarietyofapplications,particularlyincommunicationsand
networkingsystems.

PC8260isanembeddedvariantofthePC603emicroprocessor,specificallyreferred
tolaterinPC8260astheEC603e,with16Kbytesofinstructioncacheand16
Kbytesofdatacacheandnofloating-pointunit(FPU).Thesysteminterfaceunit(SIU)
consistsofaflexiblememorycontrollerthatinterfacestoalmostanyuser-defined
memorysystem,a60x-to-PCIbusbridge(availableinfuturerevisions)andmany
otherperipherals,makingthisdeviceacompletesystemonachip.

Thecommunicationsprocessormodule(CPM)of PC8260 includesalltheperipheralsfoundin
thePC860,withtheadditionofthreehigh-performancecommunicationchannelsthat
supportnewemergingprotocols(forexample,155-MbpsATMandFastEthernet).
Equippedwithdedicatedhardware,thePC8260canhandleupto256full-duplex,
time-division,multiplexedlogicalchannels.
