The ALPHA Semiconductor AS5156 contains a single IC solution for a high-current low-dropout linear voltage regulation. Using an advantageous transistor as an N-Channel power MOSFET as the linear pass element. The AS5156 features a low dropout voltage that is enhanced by the external power MOSFET. The lowest possible dropout voltage becomes the MOSFET RDS (ON) multiplied by the source drain current of the same MOSFET. The output current is only limited by the safe power handling capacity of the MOSFET. The AS5156 operates from 3V to 36V. An external gate of that same MOSFET gate drive supply is required by the AS5156 to provide the higher voltage needed to drive the gate of the external MOSFET. When the controller detects 35mV across an optional external sense resistor the regulator output is constant current limited. The AS5156 activates its flag to indicate a-low voltage of 8% or more below nominal output. A shutdown sigal to the enable control reduces controller by supply current to less than 1A and forces the output voltage to ground. The AS5156-3.3 and AS5156-5.0 controllers have internally fixed output voltages. The AS5l56 [adjustable] output is configured using two external resistors.
