8279

The 8279 is designed as general purpose programmable keyboard and display I/O interface device for use with intel microprocessors. The 8279 can provide a scanned interface to a 64-contact key matrix. The 8279 will also interface to an array of sensors or a strobed interface keyboard, such as the hall effect and ferrit variety. Key depressions can be 2-key lockout or N-key rollover. Keyboard entries are debounced and strobed in an 8-character FIFO. If more than 8 characters are entered, overrun status is set. Key entries set the interrupt output line to the CPU.

8279 has many features. The first one is simultaneous keyboard display operations. The second one is scanned keyboard mode. The third one is scanned sensor mode. The fourth one is strobed input entry mode. The fifth one is 8-character keyboard FIFO. The sixth one is 2-key lockout or N-key rollover with contact debounce. The seventh one is dual 8- or 16-numerical display. The eighth one is single 16-character dislay. The ninth one is right or left entry 16-byte display RAM. The tenth one is mode programmable from CPU. The eleventh one is programmable scan timing. The twelfth one is available in EXPRESS standard temperature range and extended temperature range. Some absolute maximum ratings of 8279 have been concluded into several points as follow. The first one is about its ambient temperature which would be from 0°C to 70°C. The second one is about its storage temperature range which would be from -65°C to 125°C. The third one is about its voltage on any pin with respect to ground which would be from -0.5V to +7V. The fourth one is about its power dissipation which would be 1W. It should be noted that stressing the device beyond the absolute maximum ratings may cause permanent damage. And so on.
