The 6N138/9 and HCPL-2730/HCPL-2731 optocouplers consist of an AlGaAs LED optically coupled to a high gain split darling-ton photodetector.
The split darlington configuration of 6N138 separating the input photo-diode and the first stage gain from the output transistor permits lower output saturation voltage and higher speed operation than possible with conventional darlington phototransistor optocou-pler. In the dual channel devices, HCPL-2730/HCPL2731, an integrated emitter - base resistor provides superior stability over temperature.
The combination of a very low input current of 0.5 mA and a high current transfer ratio of 2000% makes this family particu- larly useful for input interface to MOS, CMOS, LSTTL and EIA RS232C, while output compatibility is ensured to CMOS as well as high fan-out TTL requirements. An internal noise shield pro- vides exceptional common mode rejection of 10 kV/s.
The 6N138 uses a Light Emitting Diode and an integrated high gain photodetector to provide extremely high current transfer ratio between input and output. Separate pins for the photodiode and output stage result in TTL compatible saturation voltages and high speed operation. Where desired VCC and VO terminals may be tied together to achieve convention photodarlington operation.A base access terminal allows a gain bandwidth adjustment to be made.
The 6N138 is designed for use mainly in TTL applications. Current transfer ratio (CTR) is 300% minimum over 0 to 70 degrees C for an LED current of 1.6 mA (1 TTL Unit load). A 300% minimum CTR enables operation with 1 TTL Load using a 2.2 k ohm pull-up resistor.
Selection for lower input current down to 250 mA is available upon request.
