The 232B is designed as a two-stage transient voltage protector the provides primary and secondary protection against lightning, inductive switching and electrostatic discharge (ESD) transient threats. The first stage diverts the transient current through the ground terminal return path and the second stage clamps the voltage to a safe level without interruption of service. It is designed to protect two line pairs or four data lines from commonmode (line-to-ground) lightning or switching transients Typical applications include RS-232 transmission lines, catagory 3 systems, control & monitoring systems, analog signal transmissions and telemetry outstations.
232B has six features. (1)4 wire line-ground protection. (2)Designed for EIA standard RS-232 data lines. (3)Permanent two-stage, 2 line pair or 4 line protector. (4)Subnanosecond response time. (5)Automatic reset - does not interrupt service. (6)Effective against lightning, inductive switching and ESD. That are all the main features.
Some absolute maximum ratings of 232B have been concluded into several points as follow. (1)Its peak operatiing line voltage (VOP) would be +/-25V. (2)Its operating line current (Io) would be 200mA. (3)Its maximum transient voltage would be 10kV. (4)Its maximum transient current (8/20s waveform) would be 10kA for wire and would be 40kA for protector. (5)Its operating & storage temperature range would be from -55°C to 100°C. (6)Its response time would be less than 1 nanosecond. It should be noted that stresses above those listed in absolute maximum ratings may cause permanent damage to device.
Also some electrical characteristics of 232B are concluded as follow. (1)Its maximum clamping voltage (8/20us) at 500A would be 40V. (2)Its maximum line thruput resistance would be 12 ohms. (3)Its maximum leakage current would be 5uA. (4)Its maximum capacitance at 0V, 1MHz would be 2000pF. And so on.
