Figure 8-33 shows the MAX713 connected to provide a fast charge (with linear regulation) to both NiCad and NiMH batteries. This circuit solves two closely related problems found in portable power supplies. The circuit charges the battery and switches over from battery power to ac power when an external ac/dc adapter is plugged in. The MAX713 supplies the system load current (while the battery is being charged) by sensing and dynamically regulating the battery current. Figure 8-34 shows the operating area of the circuit.
