Attenuation of ultrasonic pulses boomed through test piece reveals presence and extent of internal defects, such as nonbonds between aluminum cladding and uranium core. Test piece and transducers are submerged in water to provide good coupling for 900-kc ultrasonic wave from barium titanate transducer of pulser. Motor sets discriminator threshold to equal signal received from attenuator.-J. D. Ross and R. W. Leep, Ultrasonic Pulses Detect Reactor-Slug Flaws, Electronics, 31:25, p 59-61.
