When R5 is illuminated by a flashlight, its resistance lowers, leaving only 10,000Ω as the minimum base resistance. That process gives a positive potential to the base of Q1, therefore turning on the transistor, activating RY2, and turning off the SCR. Or you can press S1 to turn the circuitry off.
