When rated load current is exceeded in series-regulated power supply, D1 conducts and collector voltage of Q1 acts as clamp to prevent further increase in load current. At short-circuit, load current is only fraction of full value.-K. L. Burfeindt, Over-load Protection Without High Power Dissipation, Electronics, 36:13, p 36-37.
