Gain varies automatically with strength of input signal, being lowest for weak signals. Resistors R3 and R4 modify linear control curve to give log curve desired foraudio systems. Overall gain of circuit is about 0 dB at midrange of expansion. Lower pair of LM324 quad opamp sections function as full-wave precision linear peak detector.
