Zener 6.8-v diode shunts output while feedback diodes limit input. With input below 40 mv, output is below -5 v and diodes D1, D2, and D3 are biased off. When output exceeds -6.8 v, diodes act to damp output at -6.8 v und maintain linear voltage relationships within the amplifier, preventing its saturation and allowing recovery from overloads.-J. V.
