According to the market research firm IC Insights, Qualcomm’s first quarter semiconductor sales was $3.06 billion with 56 raising percent compared to the first quarter of 2011. So the fabless semiconductor vendor moved to the No. 5 position among chip sellers in the first quarter. The greatly increasing rate was partially attributed the success to Qualcomm’s acquisition of Atheros Communications Inc., which closed in the second quarter of 2011.
After Qualcomm moved into the top 10 for the first time ever in the third quarter of 2008, the company’s No. 5 position among chip sellers came just over three years. Anyway, Qualcomm was the first fabless chip supplier ever to push into the top 10. According to IC Insights, Qualcomm (San Diego) ranked N0.7 in chip sales for all of 2011, and the N0.6 chip vendor was Gartner Inc., which did not include semiconductor foundries.
IC Insights analyzed that Qualcomm’s first quarter performance was strong attributed to smartphones, many of which feature Qualcomm chips. Qualcomm is on pace to register over $12 billion in sales this year.
