Manufacturing output had a slight, but surprising increase in March this year. Compared with last month, the seasonally adjusted manufacturing output rose by 0.9% in March.
The growth rate of the electrical equipment manufacturing was 12.1% in the first quarter of this year, which ended two previous quarterly falls. Andrew Johnson, senior economist at EEF, said “Today’s figures paint a slightly improved picture for manufacturing”; "This suggests manufacturing is in a better position at the start of this year than it was at the end of 2011," he added.
However, the rise was slight, and the other statistics were not optimistic. The seasonally adjusted index of production fell by 0.3% from March to February, and the index for March was 2.6% down on the same month a year ago. The challenges are still big with eight growing manufacturing sub-sector, four falling and one flat.
The chemicals sector, which rose by 5.6%, contributed most to the month-on-month rise in manufacturing output; the transport equipment industries followed after the chemicals sector, which rose by 3.4%. The manufacture of wood and paper products industries fell by 2.3%.
