A test suite which can help customers assess the picture quality of cellphone cameras will be released by IEEE. The suite will consist of a variety of metrics, probably simplified to a single score. The IEEE P1858 was officially re-launched in March. The P1858 has acquired the project and related asset from 13A which is the precursor of P1858.
IEEE tries to provide the customers with a more accurate and reliable way to ensure that the camera phone they purchase deliver the image quality they desire. The image quality is not just about the megapixels. Membership in the P1858 is open, and many of the companies of 13A will participate in the P1858. The overlap in membership between IEEE and I3A enables to continue developing a globally relevant CPIQ standard.
The 13A indentified fundamental attributes for a test suite so far, as well as existing standard related to them. Four aspect of the image will be measured by the group, namely depth of field, glare, color consistency and white balance. A simple system just like five-star rating will be convenient for customer to know what quality a camera phone can deliver.
The certification or validation procedures have not developed by the group, but they are expected to be finished in 18-24 months.
