A survey, aims to measure the impact of “on-shoring”, has been taken by IPC. IPC is a team that represents printed circuit board manufacturers and other electronics firms. “on-shoring” refers to the migration of electronics manufacturing operations back to the US from overseas. IPC will compile data to quantify on-shoring in terms of both location of operations and sourcing.
Electronic companies have been shifting manufacturing to emerging economies in Asia and elsewhere wages are lower and labor laws less rigorous for several years. However, some of them have returned manufacturing to the US for many reasons, such as logistic difficulties, and the increasing cost of labour, hidden cost of overseas manufacturing, and developers’ need to protect their intellectual property.
Three aspects are included in the survey: electronics manufacturing operations moving back to the Americas, new operations that companies choose to build in the Americas, and whether electronics companies are changing suppliers in order to source more materials from their home region.
IPC takes this survey to measure the changes that have taken place since 2008, identify where and in what product segment on-shoring is occuring and explain why on-shoring is happening. They will also make the impact on revenue and jobs clear. The result of the new survey will be published in June.
