According to the Technical analysts and consulting firm UBM TechInsight, Free scale Semiconductor Inc. would get the Most Innovative Process Technology Insight Award for its PK60X256VLQ100 Kinetis ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller (MCU). UBM TechInsights, based in Ottawa, Canada, is owned by UBM plc. And the company also owns and publishes EE Times.
UBM TechInsights said it had made extensive research and analysis on Freescale’s PK60X256VLQ100 ARM-based MCU. It made an examination of the device at the package and an analysis of the process technology, material identification and memory cell configuration.
UBM TechInsights made a circuit analysis to confirm the presence of on-chip non-volatile memory with split-gate thin film storage (SG-TFS) technology. SG-TFS is built with silicon nanocrystals as the storage medium, making this Kinetis MCU the first commercial product to successfully utilize this technology. UBM TechInsights said SG-TFS would be innovative for its unique construction. However, the technology results in a fast and reliable memory that is compatible with standard CMOS technology.
