A power controller has been released by Lapis Semiconductor, which is for the systems with dual power supplies like solar panel and batteries such as coin battery. Just like performing the charging control of power supplied from the solar panel to the secondary battery, the devices control the switching between the primary/secondary batteries and solar panels.
The ML9077 solar power, rechargeable battery controller automatically controls the power supplied to the microcontroller and peripheral components from a rechargeable battery as well as from the solar panels to the rechargeable battery based on the remaining charge of the battery. The device has the protection functions, such as charging stop with overcharge detection and malfunction prevention that prevents failures due to power supply stoppage caused by low voltage.
For the solar cell voltage, it is between 0.0V to 3.6V; for the secondary battery voltage, it is between 0.0V to 3.2V. The current consumption is less than 80nA at 25°C.At the primary battery, the ML9078 continuously monitors the voltage generated by the solar panel, and it selects the higher voltage for supply to the microcontroller and peripheral devices. Preventing the flow of generated current from the solar panel can protect the primary battery; coverting the generated voltage by the solar panel to low voltage can prevent the high voltage supply.
With the protection functions such as power supply selection monitoring, the peripheral circuitry are not needed. Current consumption is less than 80nA (at 25°C). The 3mm x 3mm WQFN type package is avaliable with this controller.
