Bath-based fabless start-up Xsilon’s goal is the machine-to-machine communication over domestic power. The firm intends to trade data bandwidth for coverage. It tries to reach all mains sockets in a house at low bandwidth, rather than some of the sockets at high bandwidth. The M2M service is going to connect to mobile devices, and the M2M services within the home begin to off; therefore, generation of reliable M2M connectivity becomes more and more essential for mass market take-up to begin.
In-home powerline communication is also the goal of products with HomePlug standard. The HomePlug Alliance is tracking video data rate, while Xsilon uses 2-30MHz mains spectrum to chase connectivity rather than bandwidth. Haggar aims to offer links of 100-500kbit/s for any M2M application. The power consumed by individual home appliances is monitored by home energy management; moreover, an energy display can show what is consuming what.
Xsilon is going after the markets what ZigBee is after, but it is looking for the areas where ZigBee won’t work. The ZigBee is still used where ZigBee will work. The firm is calling its system Hanadu which uses a proprietary modulation scheme. Hanadu supports networking standards including IPv6, 6LowPAN, Weightless, Home Automation Profile 1.1 and Smart Energy Profile 2.0
Xsilon intends to draw 0.5W or less from the mains; however, powerline is difficult, a typical Homeplug needs 4-5W. Followed by a dual-mode Hanadu-ZigBee product, the first chip will be released in next year; the HAN1250 module is planned to be introduced in 2013; the delivery of HAN9000 will be in the third quarter.
