The first phase of an improvement to Jaguar has been completed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Jaguar is the most powerful supercomputer in US, which will boosted from 2.3 to 3.3Pflop. The system will be renamed Tian and will be capable of 10 to 20Pflops, when the upgrade process is completed in this fall. The positive impact on applications can be seen, for example in computational fluid dynamics from the doubled memory.
The AMD Opteron cores are upgraded to the newest series, and the number is also increased from 224,256 to 299,008. A single 16-core processor is used to replace two six-core Opteron processors; meanwhile. Moreover, the system’s interconnect was updated to Gemini which is much more scalable. The Gemini supports applications like molecular dynamics that have demanding network communication requirements. The system’s memory was also double to 600Tbytes.
What is more, 960 of the nodes now also contain an NVIDIA graphical processing unit. In order to make a much larger CPU installation later in the year, the GPUs were added to the system. The function of GPU is just like accelerators which can provide a boost in computing power in far more energy-efficient system. The GPU allows Titan to reach 10-20Pflop within the same space as Jaguar.
A lot of work by many people will be pay off in this year. The customers of Oak Ridge can take advantage of the new XK6 architecture and get ready for the new NVIDIA Kepler GPUs in the autumn.
