Intel, AMD withdraw of WSTS

Late last year, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices Inc) confirmed to pull out of WSTS. According to Wall Street Journal Tuesday, Intel Corp also declared that they would exit from this organization on Feb 28th. WSTS organization is short for World Semiconductor Trade Statistics. It is a non-profit organization which publishes reports about global chip sales. Their reports have a wide application in chip sales.

SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association) and market research companies take advantage of WSTS data to evaluate the situation of IC industry. With the withdrawal of Intel and AMD, WSTS has to make an estimate of firms’ sales about microprocessor market and the whole semiconductor market.

WSTS declare on their website that data from 62 member firms could represent 75 percent of the total semiconductor market. As the world’s first largest chip manufacture, Intel’s exit would probably change these data. The website also proclaims that the top 20 chip manufactures in the world are all their members, including Intel and AMD. Intel takes more than 80 percent of global microprocessor markets.

The withdrawal of Intel and AMD will impact the data that the WSTS generates. Although the influence is not explicit, the figures will leave a big hole in microprocessor data for Intel and AMD have seized 90 percent of the MPU market. Without their reports, what WSTS could do is just guess. However, the WSTS’s administrator announces that they have many techniques to estimate sales about firms that do not report data.
