FTDI’s USB Interface Design Makes User Experience Better

The full range of USB interface design options of Future Technology Devices International are pulled together in a single range of products. The X-Chip series is available with 13 different package options. Just like FTDI’s proprietary FT1248 I/O, it supports interface types, such as UART, full UART, FIFO and I2C. The supplier said the new range will complement its existing FT-R and FT-H offerings.

The power consumption of the related devices is low. The current is 8mA when fully active and 125µA at the suspend mode. Since this series supports USB 2.0, data rates of these devices are up to 3.4Mbit/s. Detecting a charging port and causing logic to switch from data transfer to charging mode will become an essential feature of the chips. Therefore, the system’s microcontroller or microprocessor does not need to take the detection work. They can shift its focus on its core works. A simple detection process and the capacity to charge at a higher current level are the consequent. Furthermore, the capacity to charge at higher current level can shorten the time of battery charging.

Many operating systems, such as Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows XP Embedded, Windows CE, Mac OS-X, Linux 3.2 and Android, are available with the X-Chip series. Users can use the FTDI website to download USB drivers. The programming of USB specific firmware is not needed, for the USB protocol is handled by the devices. With an internal 2048 byte, multi-time programmable (MTP) memory, the storage and configuration of the necessary device descriptors become possible. The operational temperature of this series ranges from -40 °C to +85 °C.
