Imec was founded in the year of 1982 when the Flemish government started a comprehensive program in the field of microelectronics. It is a micro and nanoelectronics research center. It is heardquatered in Leuven, Belgium. The offices of this firm cover Netherlands, Taiwan, USA, China and Japan. There are 1,900 people are employed by Imec. The revenue was 285 million euro in the year of 2010.
The world’s first FRID circuit has been developed by Imec, which was made in low-temperature thin-film technology that allows reader-talks-first communication. The low-temperature thin-film technology is the method to make tags that cheap enough and has enough performance. These tags can be used for the package of consumer goods. The EU FP7 project ORICLA supports this work, which includes project coordinator imec, Holst Centre – TNO, Evonik Industries AG, and PolyIC.
There is a principle for the RFID tags with such thin-film chips on plasitic based on a tag-talks-first principle: the RFID will transmit code to the reader as soon as it gets powered from the RF field of the RFID reader. Many tags will try to contact the reader at the same time in retail applications; therefore, an effective anti-collision mechanism is needed. Tag-talks-first RFID anti-collision measures have been limited to about maximum 4 tags and come at the cost of a slow reading time, so it has never been implemented. A practical anti-collision scheme for thin-film RFID tags becomes possible with this mechanism for the first time.
