Founded in the year of 1960, Semtech Corporation is a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors. It provides proprietary solutions and breakthrough technology in power management, protection, advanced communication, human interface, test& measurement, as well as wireless and sensing products. The applications of its IC include communications, computer and computer-peripheral, automated test equipment, industrial and other industries.
A 20MHz buck converter has been released by Semtech, which can use inductors formed from PCB tracks. This is after Peregrine Semiconductor’s plan to use silicon-on-sapphire to reach a similar switching rate. The switcher, dubbed SC220, has been released by Semtech.
With the SC220, designers are able to draw their own inductors directly on the PCB. This switcher is the industry’s first buck regulator. It can provide 20MHz switching frequency when used with our inductor technology. It allows PCB trace inductors to meet or exceed the EMI performance of chip inductors. At this frequency, output capacitors as small as 1µF can be used in some applications. What is more, EMI is reduced by making the single inductor needed in the circuit out of two small series-connected inductors placed next to each and connected in magnetic anti-phase to partially cancel one another’s magnetic fields.
The technology allows a non-shielded inductor to be used in automotive power management. The SC220 steps down 2.7 to 5.5V inputs and delivers outputs down to 1.0V and up to 650mA. The package of 8pin SOIC is suitable for this chip.
