A purely electrical test that can warn the impending catastrophic failure in lithium-ion batteries is developed by the US scientists. Researchers’ discovery of an intrinsic relationship between the internal temperature of lithium-ion cells and an easily measured electrical parameter of the cell is the basic of the sensor.
Abused Li-ion cells will cause failure modes. A nearly universal manifestation of something going awry with the cell can be caused by an abnormally high internal cell temperature. If there are no corrective measures, the small changes will lead to a potentially catastrophic event. You will be unable to control it when things start to go wrong inside the cell.
A phase shift of a few degrees between a "small" alternating current at a few tens of Hz is discovered by Srinivasan and colleagues, which can be applied to the cell’s terminals. Voltage waveform is the result. The phase shift is related by a simple curve to the temperature of the critical electrochemical interface between the electrodes and the electrolyte. Scientists also find that they can measure the temperature of the protective layers between the electrodes and the electrolyte of the battery during normal operation. The thermal runaway and catastrophic cell failure are caused in these layers. The potentially unsafe thermal conditions can be detected before surface-mounted temperature sensors.
