Texas Instruments Incorporated has introduced LM10504, LM10503 and LM10506, the three single-chip, power management integrated circuits (PMICs) that are applied for all the supply rails in solid state drives (SSDs), hybrid drives and other flash memory management applications. Besides improve reliability and reduce system cost and development time, these PMICs also include a power-saving deep sleep mode, built-in current limit and thermal protection, and power-down data protection.
The new PMICs integrate three programmable 2.25-MHz DC/DC step-down converters with 95-percent peak efficiency that support core processor, memory and I/O voltages, along with a general-purpose, 3-V, 250-mA low-dropout (LDO) regulator for host controller reference.
Each PMIC functions cooperatively with a controller IC to optimize the supply voltage for low power conditions and features a deep sleep mode option that lowers the core ASIC voltage and turns off the flash and input/output rails to obtain maximum system efficiency. The LM10504 and LM10506 also include power-down data protection ensuring that the SSD controller completes the writing operation during unexpected power failure.
The LM10503 is a higher current, 2-A PMIC designed for power-hungry controllers used in enterprise SSDs. The LM10503 features the National PowerWise® adaptive voltage scaling technology from TI for reducing the power consumption of SSD controllers and increasing system power efficiency.
The LM10504 can be used in a variety of large and small, client and consumer SSD form factors including 3.5-inch, 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch, mSATA, Micro SATA, Half-Slim SATA, mini PCIe and integrated SSD.
The LM10506 is the smallest PMIC designed for ultra-portable applications in space-constrained, client and consumer SSDs including mSATA, Half-Slim SATA, mini PCIe and integrated SSD.
Texas Instruments Incorporated engages in the design and sale of semiconductors to electronics designers and manufacturers worldwide. The company’s Analog segment offers high-performance analog products comprising standard analog semiconductors, such as amplifiers, data converters, and interface semiconductors; high-volume analog and logic products; and power management semiconductors and line-powered systems. Its Embedded Processing segment includes DSPs that perform mathematical computations to process and enhance digital data; and microcontrollers, which are designed to control a set of specific tasks for electronic equipment. The company’s Wireless segment designs, manufactures, and sells application processors and connectivity products. Its other segment offers smaller semiconductor products, which include DLP products that are primarily used in projectors to create high-definition images; and application-specific integrated circuits. This segment also provides handheld graphing and scientific calculators, as well as licenses technologies to other electronic companies. The company serves the communications, computing, industrial, consumer electronics, automotive, and education sectors.
