The goal of a three year European Metrology Research Programme project is the user-friendly frequency-stabilised laser sources. This project is coordinated by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Middlesex. The opto-electronic system offers an on-site frequency calibration service, and this system is expected to be a turn-key standard for companies to use. If the researchers want to move to a Digital Britain, this type of equipment becomes an essential part of the infrastructure.
Although the frequency standards that are accurate enough for industrial applications have already been developed at NPI, these instruments are too complex to be applied in the field. The higher accuracy frequency standards are usually bulky and need to be operated by trained personnel, which become the real problem. These standards also can not work in adverse circumstances which have high levels of temperature fluctuations and vibration. However, transmitter frequencies - for example those sending digital TV down optical fibres - are going to need testing at a manufacturer’s premises, and therefore the next generation of frequency standards needs to be able to operate in industrial environments.
Apart from the telecommunications and broadcast industries, the project is also vital for calibrating frequencies in aerospace, defence, instrument manufacture, gas sensing, and navigation. The collaboration includes organisations from Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, France, Finland and Germany. Moreover, the supports from various European companies, government agencies and standards committees contribute to the success of the project.
