The Mentor Graphics director points out technology start-ups need support and the industry must meet that need. 2011 has been a strong year for Mentor Graphics, but it has been a tough time for microelectronics startups. The problem is the little venture capital can not make the semiconductor startups as far as prototyping.
There are many possible models with one particular method. The European Microelectronics Academy (EMA) opened its doors in April 2011, which is a collaborative venturing network for microelectronic sectors. It has crucible firms with new ideas, so it is easier to find partners, IP and expertise, productise the combined assets and identify customers. Thus the risk for venture funds can be reduced.
Mentor Graphics has more experience in this area. It put the weight behind Cre8Ventures which provided a networking, advice and cross-pollination forum and nurtured over 35 startups in 2005. This was an act of double wins, because these startups will buy Mentor Graphics EDA tools when the startups grow.
Currently, something broader is needed by the industry. Staff of EMA are finding sources to fill the gap. Support from industry can from direct funding for the EMA or contributions in kind to particular projects. There are twenty projects are in development within EMA now.
All in all, to join and support EMA is necessary for corporations throughout the electronics industry, because the EMA open door into a large pool of ideas, IP and expertise through a single network. The innovative electronics must be nourished; even UK has ideas, expertise and IP.
