Cobham Technical Service is an international company with a history dating back to 1920. It primary business focuses on delivery of leading edge technologies and service for aerospace, defence, security and commercial applications. Cobham Technical Service has developed the 3D Transformers Environment (TE3D) for designers of power transformers.
Using Cobham’s Opera-3d finite element electromagnetic simulation package, this system can offer a graphical user interface for designing transformer and reactors. Designers can use the dialog boxes and drop-down menus to define a transformer or reactor design. After entering this data, the software creates a three-dimensional finite element model of a reactor or transformer, together with independent drive and load circuits within the circuit editor for subsequent simulation and analysis.
Three-phase, three- and five-leg core are included in the transformer types. This software contains both racetrack and solenoid type single and multiple layer windings, and most of the commonly used winding connections specified IEC 60076-1. This software also can model the transformer design, such as lamination configuration, core clamping structures, steel support plates and clamp bolts, multiple air gaps and placement of the core inside a conductive tank.
The designers can choose simulated open-circuit, short-circuit and inrush current tests on transformers, and mutual inductance tests on reactors. The TE3D environment will send the results to the Opera Manager to be solved when the analysis is completed. For instance, in the case of the inrush current test, the calculated results will be displayed graphically, including the Lorentz forces on the primary and secondary windings, eddy currents in any support structures, iron losses in the transformer core, and transformer efficiency.
