Lumidigm Takes OSRAM Pointled as Illumination Source

Lumidigm has chosen the Pointled from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors as the illumination source for Mercury and Mariner Fingerprint Sensors (Lumidigm M-Series). With its proprietary multispectral imaging technology, Lumidigm has long been at the forefront of the fingerprint sensor market. The recent adoption of the compact, bright and efficient OSRAM Pointled has enabled Lumidigm to reduce the size and cost of its sensors and expand the reach of fingerprint authentication into new applications.

Lumidigm is a renovator in fingerprint biometrics, offering state-of-the-art fingerprint scanning with special emphasis on high performanc. Lumidigm’s patented multispectral fingerprint technology closes a 20% performance gap because it illuminates both surface and subsurface fingerprint features, and then collects more biometric information from the finger.

The company chose the Pointled product from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors for Mercury and Mariner product lines for the unique combination of small package size, symmetric radiation pattern, long lifetime and the ability to operate in high ambient temperatures. These attributes made it possible to develop a compact illumination system which produces a highly uniform and efficient lighting profile at the fingerprint reader platen. With the excellent output of the OSRAM Pointled, Lumidigm is able to leverage multispectral technology in a compact fingerprint sensor series.

The OSRAM Pointled is an excellent combination of advanced package and chip technologies. As the smallest LED with an integrated reflector, it is an ideal option for both surface mount technology (SMT) and zero-height mounting. Its compact dimensions – 2 mm diameter x 0.775 mm high – allow this mini light source to be sunk completely in the printed circuit board, making it ideal for applications. The typical brightness of the white mini LED is 800 mcd at a beam angle of 120°.
