Nordic Upgrades the Bluetooth Software Stack

The fabless semiconductor company Nordic is specialized in wireless communication, mixed signal as well as complex digital and analogue integrated circuit design. This firm attaches much importance at high speed wireless communication in the 2.4 GHz ISM band. The wireless gamepad, mouse and keyboard, mobile handset, intelligent sports equipment, remote control, wireless voice/audio applications (e.g. Voice over IP), security and toys are the target applications of its products.

Nordic Semiconductor upgrades its Bluetooth software stack and cuts the power consumption of its nRF8001 Bluetooth 4.0 low energy IC. The revised one is called nRF8001 ’Build D’ which is in compatible with the current(Build C) revision. The new power saving features and enhanced Bluetooth stack are easily accessible through an expanded application controller interface (ACI) command set that can be used by extending existing application code.

With the stack features required for the Bluetooth low energy human interface device (HID) profile, the chip can be used in a wireless PC peripherals and navigational remote controls for TVs and set-top boxes. An on-chip +/-250ppm 32kHz oscillator is included in the nRF8001. The Build C has a potential power consumption penalty of running on the internal +/-250ppm 32kHz RC oscillator versus an more accurate, while this penalty can be reduced by the Build D. The special features in the peer device are not needed by this technique.

The feature of ’application latency’ also saves power consumption, which also need no modification in the peer device. Application latency can reduce latency, which enables developers to take advantage of higher slave latency while at the same time meeting all required data latency requirements. More than thirty percent of the power can be saved.
