The latest embedded computer module Congatec is going to increase its dependence on ARM processors. It always used the x86-based processors from Intel and AMD in its modules, and then it will use more ARM technology. Consequently, it will use Freescale’s ARM-based i.MX portfolio of products, which becomes its first step to expand its Oseven product with Freescale processors.
The ARM-based products are already provided by the embedded computer module suppliers Kontron and MSC. The latest ARM processors will support the PC interfaces needed in computer-on-module product design. The COM concept integrates all generally available interfaces onto the computer module itself while any special interfaces are implemented on individually-tailored carrier boards. On the contrary, the specialised interfaces of the main ARM processors are ideal for the dedicated applications.
The ARM processors can not be interchangeable or scalable, and these can not be used by COMs in a standard format. However; the new generation of ARM processors pays much attention on standard PC interface to make it more suitable for the COMs. In order to be compatible with ARM-based modules, the Oseven specification was updated in September 2010. With the operating support and long-term availability, Freescale is able to support congatec AG to meet the customers’ requirement. With congatec’s Qseven modules, Freescale’s next generation i.MX products will be introduced into applications more quickly and easily. The Freescale collaboration will be available in the middle of 2012.
