Microchip Technology’s MCP9808 silicon temperature sensor can serve a broad range of applications as it guarantees high accuracy of 0.5 degrees from -20°C to 100°C, along with high temperature resolution of 12 bits. It is in a small MSOP and 2×3 mm DFN 8-pin packages. Additional features include shutdown, and under/over-temperature monitor and a critical-temperature alert.
The combination of the MCP9808’s wide range of features with one of the industry’s highest accuracy silicon temperature sensors makes applications with high accuracy over a wide range of temperatures possible. These applications include thermostats operating at -20 to +45°C, personal computers operating at +85°C and industrial or automotive applications which have an operating temperature of up to +125°C.
Accurate temperature monitoring and control enables more efficient operation make many applications benefit from reduced energy consumption. The MCP9808 can help to adjust the real-time power utilization of applications ranging from residential HVAC systems to industrial equipment with its shutdown and temperature monitoring/alert features. The shutdown feature reduces power consumption in both line- and battery-powered systems. The on-chip over/under temperature monitor can improve system performance through thermal optimization. The MCP9808’s critical-temperature can increase the system’s life by preventing harmful operating temperatures.
For temperature sensing applications, the MCP9808 has user-programmable registers which enable user-selectable settings include shutdown and low-power modes and the specification of temperature Event and Critical output boundaries. The user has the option of setting the event output signal polarity as an active-low or active-high comparator output for microprocessor-based systems.
Microchip Technology Incorporated engages in the design, development, manufacture, and market of semiconductor products for embedded control applications. Its product portfolio includes microcontrollers and development tools that enable system designers to program a PIC microcontroller and dsPIC DSC for specific applications. The company also offers analog and interface products and technology licensing products. In addition, it licenses flash intellectual property solutions, and provides assembly and test services for semiconductor manufacturers. The company serves automotive, communications, computing, consumer, and industrial control markets.
