Recently, SEMI completed its annual silicon shipment forecast that provides an outlook for the demand in silicon units for the period 2011 to 2013 for the semiconductor industry. According to the forecast, polished and epitaxial silicon shipments will total 9131 million square inches in 2011, 9529 million square inches in 2012, and 9995 million square inches in 2013. Total wafer shipments are expected to nudge past the high set last year and continue to increase at modest levels over the next two years.
Given the tremendous shipment momentum established during the first part of the year total 2011 shipment are expected to remain at record levels while short-term softening is being experienced, growth expectations for the next two years remain positive.
Silicon wafers are the fundamental building material for semiconductors, which in turn, are vital components of virtually all electronics goods, including computers, telecommunications productions, and consumer electronics. The highly engineered thin round disks are produced in various diameters from one inch to 12 inches and serve as the substrate material on which more than 95 percent of today’s semiconductor devices or chips are fabricated.
All data cited in this release are inclusive of polished silicon wafers, including virgin test wafers, and epitaxial silicon wafers shipped by wafers manufacturers to semiconductor end-users.
SEMI is the global industry association serving the nano- and microelectronic manufacturing supply chains. SEMI member companies are the engine of the future, enabling smarter, faster and more economical products that improve our lives. Since 1970, SEMI has been committed to helping members grow more profitably, create new markets and meet common industry challenges. SEMI maintains offices in many cities all over the world.
