A national strategy for power electronics has been released by the UK government. More than 50 companies and 16 universities, which represent sectors such as transport, consumer/lighting, energy and industrial drives, have made a consultation.

It is reported by the government that UK is prepared to lead world in the power electronics sector with £135bn per year. However, the companies in UK are facing the challenges from all over the world, not least a graduate skills shortage affecting UK industry’s ability to keep pace with incremental innovation. Moreover, the strategic funding for highly innovative, relatively high-risk projects, stifling the aspirations of SEMs and start-ups is short.

So many elements enable UK to the leader of power electronic, namely the reputation, strong market position, globally successful companies and the research prowess. In order to keep the position, many measures should be taken by the UK government: creating an environment that enables the companies to be competitive; aligning the interests of industry, government and academia; delivering younger specialist engineers through the university system.

The formation of the National Forum for Power Electronic with an ongoing annual review of progress against the strategy action plan is the first stage. A practical and pragmatic approach is needed by the UK companies. Furthermore, in order to promote best practice and support innovation, the microelectronics industry in UK will continue to work with government, academia and the industry.
