An image recognition device is released by Renesas Electronics and its subsidiary Renesas Mobile, which is used by automobiles. This new device implements a camera-based surround view systems together with the display of crucial information such as vehicles, signs and pedestrians.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) applications create the demand for higher level o image recognition technology. The lane deviation warning systems and the display applications are the developing trends. The rear-view monitor and top view systems are belonging to these applications. The seamless safety support system of the advances makes it cover the front automobile as well as its surroundings.

Meanwhile, image recognition systems change according to the lane recognition, thus the objects on the road, such as signs, markings, pedestrians and vehicles, can be covered by the device. This has led to a demand for increased performance in image recognition engines, which must perform multiple processing tasks in parallel. The hardware engine, which is integrated in the SH7766 SoC, can make the new view functions. For each video input, the image renderer (IMR) viewpoint conversion engine generates in real time top view images. The viewpoint changes according to the surroundings in real time top view images.

The driver with a display can easily find his way in all lighting or dark condition, because the dynamic range control (DRC) function adjusts the composite video brightness to compensate for indistinctness, even when handling multiple video feeds with large differences due to sunlight and shade. Furthermore, the capabilities necessary for an NTSC camera system are offered on a single chip, for the SH7766 SoC has six video input channels.
