The 2011 Electronex electronics design and assembly expo was held on 14 to 15 September 2011 at the Melbourne Park Function Centre. The Surface Mount & Circuit Board Association Conference 2011 was hosted at the conference centre next to the expo and delegates heard from both local and international speakers on a number of topics.
Over 1000 attendees visited the expo over the two days in all, while the SMCBA Conference had 144 delegates. This year’s Melbourne event increased in size by approximately 25 percent on the 2010 inaugural event in Sydney, with 64 exhibitors representing over 90 companies.
The continued growth and success of the Electronex event presents an optimistic yardstick for the health of the electronics industry in Australia.
Scott Cree, sales manager of Mentor Technologies, was showcasing its design software for PCBs, FPGAs and wiring harnesses. He said he was impressed and as soon as they opened the door, people were coming through and asking lots of questions. He even though that there has been a fairly high turnover of people throughout the morning.
Rohde & Schwarz took the opportunity to its expansion toward the general electronics market, with a new range of oscilloscopes in addition to its traditional RF equipment.
Westek Electronics also introduced attendees to its new company West Solar, a distribution company for solar panels and solar-powered gadgets.
Ray Keefe from Successful Endeavours was at Electronex as a visitor, said electronics is a fast moving market and it’s a hard thing to keep up with the speed.
Executive officer of the SMCBA, Andrew Pollock, said the event was a success, as was the conference. The conference was condensed into two days and aligned with the exhibition times. The extra rooms at the Melbourne venue meant delegates could attend concurrent sessions and get access to the same amount of information.
Pollock said there was an extra speaker here this year from overseas, making a total of four speakers. Doug Brooks from UltraCAD is delivering one the session for the designers. Suzie Webb is delivering the other session. We got Matt Kelly from IBM who is talking about high reliability lead-free assembly and test, and Rick Stanton who has just recently started his own consulting business. He has a great deal of expertise, procedures and systems to handle issues to do with counterfeit components.
Anthony Doran from Australasian Exhibitions & Exhibitions, a key organizer behind Electronex, said he was optimistic about the whole industry.
He said they have concentrated on broadening the product diversity of the show and there is a greater range of product now and on the floor than the one in Sydney.
The response from exhibitors has been very warm, both for this year and for the 2012 iteration. Most exhibitors from Sydney rebooked for Melbourne, and the show sold out of exhibition space four weeks before the event, even with increased floor space.
