A family of LLC power supply ICs is introduced by Power Integrations. The controller, high- and low-side drivers, and both mosfets are included in this family, but not power factor correction.
The HiperLCS is an integrated LLC power stage incorporating a multi-function controller, high-side and low-side gate drivers, plus two power MOSFETs in a half-bridge configuration. Branded HiperLCS, the devices mop up as many as 30 discrete components from more conventional designs and eliminate design tweaking by factory trimming and pre-matching the co-packaged mosfets. Mosfet matching is used to avoid shoot-through, which is partly responsible for the high maximum operating frequency.
Due to the LLC converters’ high efficiency and ability which can produce compact power supplies, it is welcomed in the high-power topologies for applications such as PCs and server power supplies, TVs and LED, streetlights. However, using the LLC converter to design is very complicated. Luckily, the challenge has been overcome by HiperLCS’s providing all the required functions in a single IC.
Maximum efficiency is claimed to be better than 97% at 66kHz operation, while 750kHz switching leads to small transformers and ceramic rather than electrolytic output capacitors. Maximum power is achieved at 250 kHz, where 96% efficiency is possible. For a power factor-corrected design based on HiperLCS plus the firm’s own PFC chip, claimed total efficiency for a 320W gold-rated PC PSU is 89.7%. Six devices from 110 to 440W are available, in a 16x8x2mm (plus legs) clip-mounted single-in-line package with a grounded heat pad.
Design software is also include in the firm’s downloadable PIX1s tool, which will set key circuit parameters including dead-time and soft-start.
