Elma Electronic was founded in 1960 and based in Wetzikon, Switzerland. The company is a publicly traded Swiss electronics company. Systems Platforms, Backplanes, Enclosures & Components, Rotary Switches, and Cabinet Enclosures are five product divisions of the company. The largest segment is systems packaging solutions serving the military, aerospace, homeland security, medical and industrial markets.
The Elma Bustronic division develops backplanes, including VME320. The VME320 was fastest VME backplane all over the world in the year of 1997. The backplanes are also developed by Elma Bustronic in OpenVPX, VMEbus, VME64X, CompactPCI, MicroTCA, and custom bus structures. It is also one of the members of the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group, VME International Trade Association, and member of the OpenVPX Industry Working Standards Group.
According to the design principles of IEEE 802.3-2008 and IEEE 802.3ba-2010 standards, Elma Electronic has designed 40G AdvancedTCA (ATCA) backplanes. Four channels x 10Gbit/s is provided by the ATCA backplanes. The devices also feature a controlled-impedance stripline design of 18 layers in a dual star routing configuration. By using extensive pre-layout and post-layout simulation studies, the backplane results can be achieved. The signal integrity simulations have been done to demonstrate that 10Gbit/s/link performance can be achieved with reasonable costs and manufacturing processes.
In order to have superior performance, Nelco 4000 13-SI high grade laminate material was used and the backplane was back drilled to minimize stub reflections. Test data is available upon request. Furthermore, the devices have the other features include dual shelf manager connectors in slot 0 for redundant IPMB implementation and up to 400W/slot 48VDC distribution to each slot.
