The 100 E Ink Display Developed by Plastic Logic

Plastic Logic is a spin-off company from Cambridge University’s Cavendish Laboratory and specializes in polymer transistors and electronics. The details of a capacitive touch e-reader with a 10.7in plastic-substrate E Ink display have been released by this firm. This e-reader is called 100.

The base is not glass, so the display is shatterproof and rugged. This characteristic makes it suited for the students. Display resolution is 1,280x960 at 150pixel/in. in a 216x280x7.65mm product weighing 475g. Inside is an 800MHz ARM processor from Marvell with 4Gbyte of storage running Windows CE.

The touch screen controls everything of the device. Tap on a textbook: It automatically opens to the page where you left off. Swipe your finger from right to left to turn the page. With the virtual keyboard to make a note on a page, students can search, underline and annotate a text. The students can find the all the things they need, because this device has delivered the whole textbooks in one place. The textbooks will not be changed, damaged or deleted with the in-built security.

A similar e-reader/tablet, which is aimed at business and consumers had been released last year. The similar device is called Que which is expensive and quire withdrawn after delivery delays. The 100 does not some special functions of Que, because it is designed for students, for example, it does not have a calendar.

The commercial product based on 100 hardware is going to be released in the future days. It is not sure when the new commercial product will be released. The 100 only can connect with the micro USB socket. The main advantages of the 100 E Ink display are low power consumption and sunlight readability. It also has some disadvantages, such as slow and monochrome.
