A multi-core STB SoC called Orly is sampled by STMicroelectronics, which has an ARM Cortex -A9 and a quad-core ARM Mali-400 MP GPU. With this chip, the content and applications can be played back through software environments such as Android, Qt and the HTML5 open internet standard and supports Adobe Flash-based gaming, media and data-driven applications.
The developers believe e System on Chip solution ST has created using the ARM Cortex-A9 processor and the standard for future set top box design will be set by Mali-400MP GPU. The supports Pay TV and ’Over the Top’ delivery will be the key to the future growth in related segment. Users can choose from a wide variety of middleware stacks by the Orly which combines components and their applications via computer software, in order to deliver the best possible user experience, filter data for privacy protection, provide interaction with other services, as well as offer assistance in handling secure transactions.
Taking advantage of Adobe runtimes, Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) on platforms, such as Android(TM), are available with Orly. Because web applications have many characteristics of desktop application software, users can navigate the web or play online games directly from their STB. Users are also able to download standalone Flash based applications via TV App Stores, because Orly supports for Adobe AIR.
All the latest broadcast and video compression standards are available with Orly, including H.264/MPEG2/4 AVC, Multi-View Coding (MVC) for 3D television, as well as VC1 and Google Webm, which are used to decode and play video content by streaming Internet sources such as web software, broadcast services and real-time video conferencing. Dual 1080p 60Hz decoding, SVC decoding and HD encoding can extend the video standards by enabling higher-quality video bit-streaming, which is also allowed by this chip. Moreover, Orly also can keep the image fluid as a film, because it supports HD 3D at 60 frames/second per eye.
