Mosaid Gains 2000 Patents of Nokia

Mosaid Technologies Incorporated is one of the world’s leading intellectual property (IP) companies. The Company’s core business is the licensing of patented semiconductor and wireless/wireline communications IP, complemented by the development of innovative semiconductor memory technology. The Core Wireless Licensing has been gained by this firm, which is owned by Nokia before. This business makes the patent of Mosaid increase to 5400.

The move reflects the growing value put on patents following the $4.5bn sale of Nortel’s patents, the $12.5bn sale of Motorola Mobility to Google – allegedly valued so high because of the value of its patents, and the $3bn+ value put on the upcoming sale of InterDigital’s patents. Qualcomm extracted billions of dollars in licensing fees for licensing CDMA IP at the 3G wireless generation.

The patents of Nokia can be used in a wide range of mobile communication devices and services. One hundred of the patent families are composed of approximately 1,200 patents and applications. These patents are very important for the second, third and fourth-generation communications standards, such as GSM (Global Systems for Mobile communications), UMTS / WCDMA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service / Wide-Band Code Division Multiple Access) and LTE (Long Term Evolution). Moreover, approximately 800 wireless implementation patents form the rest of the portfolio.

The acquisition of the portfolio will be founded by Mosaid from future licensing and enforcement revenues. This firm will also record all future royalties received from monetizing the patents as revenue. The Nokia patent portfolio is expected to generate more revenue that is over $1bn. one third of the revenues generated by the patent portfolio will be taken by Mosaid, and e the other two thirds of revenues will be taken by Nokia and Microsoft.
