An alternative sound-based approach, which is developed by a team of researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, can be used to find ways for cyclists. If you have tried to use the GPS navigation when cycling, you may know that the comparison is lacked, because the cyclist can not keep their eyes on the road and on the screen at the same time.
The smart phone application which has been made by Matthijs Zwinderman and colleagues is called Oh Music. By playing the music through headphones, the application can guide cyclists to their destination. The music pans around depending on which way the cyclist is heading and always appears to come from the direction they want to head in and gets louder as they get nearer.
Some people may worry about the safety problem. The researchers maintain that this application makes the cyclists’ hands and eyes free at least. The headphones that have external microphones also can be used, which can pass the external sound through to the cyclist while overlaying the music. The special headphones also can work in another way. The application currently works best when the phone is strapped to the cyclist’s head. This is the only way to ensure an accurate reading from the compass sensor. Headphone with a built-in compass is suggested to be the way forward. The application also can be downloaded from the Android phone.
